Unesco strengthens emergency support for countries hit by natural disasters

Paris – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has announced increased support for ten countries facing emergency situations, many of them linked to natural disasters and extreme weather events recorded during the autumn of 2025.

According to the organization, recent months have seen a surge in crises affecting education systems, cultural heritage, and access to information across several regions of the world. In response, Unesco has allocated more than one million dollars to provide immediate assistance in areas falling under its mandate.

Several countries have been impacted in different ways. In the Caribbean, a powerful hurricane damaged cultural sites, schools, and media infrastructure. In Southeast Asia, heavy rainfall caused significant harm to World Heritage sites and educational facilities. Elsewhere, insecurity and instability have disrupted learning environments and threatened the safety of students and teachers.

Since November 2025, Unesco’s Director-General has approved a series of technical and financial assistance measures to help affected countries respond to urgent needs. Beyond emergency relief, the organization stresses that these actions are designed to lay the foundations for long-term recovery and stronger community resilience.

The support includes restoring educational continuity, assessing damage to cultural heritage, improving access to clean water, strengthening information reliability, and providing psychosocial assistance to vulnerable populations. Special attention is being given to teachers, students, and displaced communities to help them recover from the social and psychological impact of crises.

Unesco underlines that culture, education, and science are essential pillars of recovery, enabling communities not only to rebuild infrastructure but also to restore dignity, knowledge, and social cohesion in the aftermath of disasters.
