Ceasefire agreement in October deemed “rushed” ahead of Trump visit
Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, described the ceasefire agreement signed in October with Cambodia as “rushed,” following its suspension and renewed border clashes. The deal had been brokered under the auspices of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur at a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting, Sihasak said that the timing of the joint declaration had been influenced by U.S. priorities. “I noticed that sometimes we rushed to issue the declaration because the United States wanted it signed in time for President Trump’s visit,” he explained.
The statement comes two weeks after tensions re-emerged along the Thailand-Cambodia border, highlighting the fragility of agreements negotiated under external pressure. Regional diplomats are urging continued dialogue to prevent further escalation.
