Ukrainian drone strikes cripple key Russian defenses in ongoing battlefield campaign
Ukraine’s 39th Separate Coastal Defense Brigade has reportedly eliminated two major Russian military assets a Strela-10 air defense system and a 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled artillery system during a coordinated three-day offensive. The precision drone strikes, executed by FPV and Vampire assault drones, mark another stage in Kyiv’s methodical effort to dismantle Moscow’s battlefield infrastructure.
Systematic elimination of enemy targets
According to the brigade, the mission began with surveillance teams locating the Russian units before drone operators launched multiple attacks to confirm complete destruction. This sequential striking strategy, combining aerial reconnaissance with targeted engagement, aims to reduce Russian maneuverability and defense capacity across contested frontlines.
The loss of the Strela-10 system, a short-range surface-to-air launcher designed to neutralize low-altitude threats, significantly weakens Russian protection against Ukrainian drones and aircraft. Eliminating the 2S9 Nona-S, a versatile 120 mm artillery platform used for both direct and indirect fire, further erodes Russia’s capacity for ground-based offensive and defensive support.
Part of a wider strategic campaign
The operation is part of Ukraine’s broader push to degrade Russian military effectiveness through sustained precision attacks. Similar operations have intensified in recent weeks, targeting radar arrays, fighter jets, and air defense networks both along the front and deep within Russian territory.
On the night of December 20–21, Ukrainian intelligence operatives reportedly sabotaged two Russian fighter jets a Su-30 and a Su-27 at the Lipetsk airfield. Earlier in the month, multiple Ukrainian drone assaults on the Belbek air base in Crimea destroyed radar installations, air defense equipment, and several aircraft.
According to reports, these strikes align with Kyiv’s efforts to disrupt Russia’s capacity to launch large-scale missile attacks on Ukrainian urban and energy infrastructures. By systematically eliminating air defense and artillery assets, Ukraine seeks to widen operational vulnerabilities and gradually reclaim strategic initiative across multiple fronts.
