Macron visits the UAE to celebrate Christmas with French troops
French President Emmanuel Macron began an official visit to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, where he is spending Christmas with French troops stationed in the Gulf country. The trip also aims to strengthen strategic cooperation between Paris and Abu Dhabi, particularly in security and defense matters.
Upon his arrival in Abu Dhabi, Macron met with Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and senior officials. Discussions focused on deepening bilateral ties, as France and the UAE maintain close cooperation across several sectors, including defense, trade, culture, and emerging technologies.
More than 900 French soldiers are currently deployed across three military bases in the UAE. Macron addressed the troops, following a long-standing tradition of French presidents spending the holiday season with forces stationed abroad. The visit underscores France’s commitment to maintaining a strong military presence in a region marked by multiple geopolitical crises.
The French president is also seeking greater cooperation from Emirati authorities in the fight against international drug trafficking. French officials believe that some high-profile drug traffickers have taken refuge in the UAE, prompting Paris to push for closer judicial and security coordination.
Beyond security issues, French forces in the region are involved in counter-terrorism missions, maritime security operations, and efforts to protect shipping routes. Macron’s visit highlights France’s ambition to preserve strategic autonomy and regional stability amid an increasingly tense international environment.
