Al Pacino to receive SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award in 2027
American actor Al Pacino will receive the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award in 2027, honouring his exceptional contributions to film, television and theatre, as well as his humanitarian efforts. The announcement by the performers’ union recognises a career spanning more than six decades and featuring some of the most memorable performances in modern cinema.
Pacino, who will become the award’s 62nd recipient, is scheduled to be honoured in Los Angeles on February 28, 2027, during the 33rd annual Actors Awards ceremony. The event is set to be broadcast live on Netflix, bringing together performers and other figures from the entertainment industry to celebrate achievements in acting.
The SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award is presented annually to a performer whose career reflects the highest ideals of the acting profession. In its announcement, the union highlighted Pacino’s artistic legacy and his lasting influence on generations of actors and audiences.
In a statement, Pacino expressed gratitude for the recognition, reflecting on the role acting and his fellow performers have played throughout his life. He said that working with scripts and collaborating with other actors had remained among his greatest sources of happiness, adding that he was honoured to have his journey recognised by SAG-AFTRA.
Born Alfredo James Pacino in New York City, Pacino faced difficulties finding steady work during the 1960s before achieving his major film breakthrough in 1972 with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. His portrayal of Michael Corleone, the reluctant heir to a powerful crime family, helped establish him as one of Hollywood’s most distinctive leading actors.
He went on to build an extensive body of work across film, television and theatre. His best-known roles include New York police officer Frank Serpico in Serpico (1973) and Miami drug lord Tony Montana in Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983). More recently, he appeared as film talent agent Marvin Schwarz in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), demonstrating his continued presence in major productions decades after his rise to fame.
Pacino’s achievements have been recognised across several major award ceremonies. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman (1992), and has also received multiple Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe awards for his work on screen and stage.
SAG-AFTRA president Sean Astin praised Pacino’s artistic abilities in the union’s announcement, describing him as a performer whose work inspires both admiration and respect. Astin noted that watching Pacino act offers a glimpse of an artist who embodies the roles of both student and master within the profession.
Pacino’s contribution extends beyond entertainment. He participated in the televised charity event America: A Tribute to Heroes, organised following the September 11, 2001, attacks, and received the Jane Wyman Humanitarian Award from the Arthritis Foundation in 2009 in recognition of his charitable efforts.
SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 professionals working across acting, broadcasting, television journalism, dance, music, voice performance and other areas of media and entertainment. The 2027 honour will add another milestone to Pacino’s career, celebrating not only his celebrated performances but also his broader contribution to the acting community.
