Italy foils suspected Russian cyberattacks targeting Milan-Cortina winter olympics
Italian authorities have announced that several cyberattacks believed to be linked to Russian actors were successfully neutralized ahead of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, set to open in the coming days.
According to Italy’s foreign minister, the attempted intrusions targeted a number of digital platforms, including websites connected to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as infrastructure associated with the Winter Olympics. Among the affected systems were online services linked to Italy’s diplomatic network abroad and facilities tied to Olympic venues in northern Italy.
The attacks were reportedly detected and blocked before causing operational disruption, highlighting the heightened cybersecurity measures put in place ahead of major international events. Officials stressed that protecting digital infrastructure is a key priority, particularly as global sporting competitions are increasingly viewed as potential targets for cyber interference.
The Milan-Cortina Winter Games, which will be hosted across several locations in northern Italy, are considered a major test of the country’s logistical and security capabilities. Authorities have intensified monitoring efforts, especially in regions hosting athletes, officials, and international delegations.
Cybersecurity experts note that large-scale sporting events often attract attempts at digital sabotage, disinformation campaigns, or data breaches, underscoring the growing link between geopolitics and cyber threats in the global sports arena.
