Israeli air strike in Lebanon kills four, Heightening tensions over fragile ceasefire

At least four people were killed and three others injured in an Israeli air strike on southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health. The attack has added new strain to the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been in place since November 2024.

The Lebanon News Agency (LNA) reported that the strike, carried out at around 2:15 p.m. local time, targeted a vehicle in the town of Kfarsir, in the Nabatieh district, using a guided missile.

The incident occurred a day after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of escalating military operations in response to his call for negotiations aimed at ending the cycle of cross-border violence.

A fragile truce under fire

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited in 2023, when the Lebanese group began launching rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in late 2024, Israeli forces have continued near-daily raids, claiming to target Hezbollah positions.

According to the United Nations, 111 civilians have been killed in Lebanon since the truce began. Among the victims are first responders and journalists, highlighting the growing toll on non-combatants.

Rising tensions along the border

President Aoun has urged for direct talks with Israel to achieve a “lasting peace” and an end to Israeli military presence in five areas of southern Lebanon. However, Israel argues that Lebanon has failed to restrain Hezbollah, which continues to maintain its armed capabilities.

In a sign of worsening tensions, Lebanese forces were ordered this week to confront any new Israeli incursions after troops reportedly entered the border town of Blida, killing a municipal employee identified as Ibrahim Salameh.

Israel’s military claimed its troops acted against an “immediate threat” linked to Hezbollah infrastructure, but provided no evidence.

Observers warn that the repeated violations of the ceasefire could lead to a renewed regional conflict, as both sides exchange accusations of aggression.
