US congress approves permanent lifting of sanctions on Syria

The United States Congress has approved legislation that permanently lifts American sanctions imposed on Syria, marking a significant shift in Washington’s policy toward the war-torn country. The measure was adopted as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, following approval by both chambers of Congress.

The sanctions, originally enacted during the rule of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, had severely restricted Syria’s access to the international financial system and limited foreign investment. Their removal is expected to facilitate economic recovery efforts and open the door to renewed international engagement.

The bill now awaits final approval by President Donald Trump, whose administration has previously expressed support for easing restrictions on Syria as part of a broader normalization process. In recent months, enforcement of the sanctions had already been temporarily suspended, signaling a gradual change in U.S. policy.

Syrian officials welcomed the congressional vote, describing it as an opportunity to rebuild economic ties and strengthen cooperation with international partners. Observers note, however, that the long-term impact will depend on political stability and regional dynamics in the Middle East.

The decision represents a turning point after years of economic isolation, reflecting evolving diplomatic priorities and renewed debate over how sanctions influence post-conflict recovery.
