Morocco expands hotel capacity with 43,000 new beds as tourism investment surges
Morocco has added 43,000 new hotel beds over the past two years, bringing its total accommodation capacity to more than 304,000 beds. This milestone reflects the success of the country’s 2023–2026 tourism roadmap, which emphasizes infrastructure development, sector diversification, and expanded investment across regions.
Strategic growth under national roadmap
The Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering (SMIT) unveiled the updated figures during its recent board meeting in Rabat, chaired by the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor. The meeting highlighted SMIT’s progress in implementing Morocco’s tourism strategy and outlined priorities for the coming years.
Minister Ammor underscored the roadmap’s focus on developing diverse tourism products as a key driver of growth. She emphasized the importance of enhancing Morocco’s competitiveness as a destination by investing in accommodation and entertainment while promoting balanced regional development to ensure all areas benefit from the sector’s expansion.
Broadening the tourism offer
In addition to increasing accommodation capacity, SMIT has supported over 1,500 projects since the roadmap’s launch. These include initiatives in gastronomic tourism, eco-tourism, and entertainment, all designed to create unique visitor experiences, extend stays, and generate sustainable local jobs.
SMIT Director General Imad Barrakad highlighted the agency’s efforts to diversify tourism offerings while prioritizing projects with strong local impacts. By collaborating with territorial authorities and institutional partners, SMIT aims to enhance regional competitiveness and guide investments toward areas with untapped potential.
Barrakad also stressed the importance of using digital tools and proximity-based approaches to tailor projects to each region’s specific strengths and needs. This strategy aims to attract investors, modernize services, and simplify administrative processes to improve the overall investment environment.
Future focus
Looking ahead to 2026, SMIT plans to deepen its implementation of the tourism roadmap by promoting investment, expanding digital services for investors, and fostering balanced territorial development. These efforts aim to sustain Morocco’s tourism momentum while adapting to evolving travel trends and rising demand.
