Hungarian Gripen Fighter Jet Crashes, Pilot Escapes Unharmed After Ejection

A JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet from the Hungarian army crashed on Monday near Szolnok, in the central part of the country. The pilot successfully ejected before the crash, and no casualties have been reported. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident.

Pilot Ejects Before Crash

A Gripen from the Hungarian army crashed on Monday close to the city of Szolnok, according to Prime Minister Peter Magyar. The pilot was able to eject from the aircraft before it hit the ground.

Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi confirmed that the aviator was alive and had been taken care of by emergency services. Initial reports from authorities indicate that there were no serious injuries.

No deaths have been reported in the crash area either.

No Civil Infrastructure Affected

Hungarian authorities specified that the crash did not cause damage to civil infrastructure. This clarification is particularly important as the aircraft went down near a populated area.

The exact circumstances of the accident remain unknown for now. An investigation has been initiated to establish the causes of the aircraft's loss.

Hungary Operates 18 Gripens

As a NATO member, Hungary uses JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets primarily for its air defense missions. The Hungarian fleet consists of 18 aircraft, stationed at the Kecskemét airbase.

The Gripen, designed by Swedish manufacturer Saab, is utilized by several European air forces and is one of the main combat aircraft of the Hungarian air force.

Previous Accident in 2015

This is not the first time a Hungarian Gripen has been involved in an accident. In 2015, an aircraft made a forced landing in central Hungary due to a technical issue.

Once again, the pilot managed to eject and survive the incident. The aircraft was subsequently repaired.

Authorities will now need to determine whether the accident near Szolnok is linked to a technical problem or if it resulted from another failure. The findings of the investigation will clarify the circumstances under which the fighter lost control.
