Fuel aid scheme attracts over 439,000 applications from heavy drivers in France
More than 439,000 applications have already been submitted in France for government assistance aimed at “heavy drivers” who are heavily impacted by rising fuel costs, according to official figures released on Sunday by government authorities.
The support scheme, designed to help workers who depend on their vehicles for daily travel, is part of a broader package of targeted measures introduced by the French government to ease the pressure of fluctuating energy prices. Eligible beneficiaries are expected to begin receiving payments starting in June.
Government officials confirmed that the aid system is fully operational and includes several complementary measures targeting different sectors affected by fuel price volatility. These include financial support for fishermen, adjustments to mileage allowances for home-care workers, and continued assistance for transport, construction, and agricultural industries.
Authorities also highlighted a tax-exempt fuel bonus of up to €600 that companies can voluntarily provide to employees, aimed at encouraging employer participation in easing transport-related costs.
The government estimates the total cost of the package at approximately €1.2 billion. Officials stated that the measures are designed to be targeted and efficient, ensuring that public funds are directed toward workers most affected by energy price fluctuations.
The initiative comes in response to ongoing instability in global energy markets, which has led to significant variations in fuel prices in recent months. Policymakers say the strategy focuses on supporting employment and economic activity while mitigating the impact of energy costs on households and businesses.
