French authorities rescue 78 migrants attempting channel crossing
French authorities rescued 78 migrants after the engine of their small boat failed during an attempt to cross the English Channel from Belgium. The French maritime prefecture dispatched several vessels following reports of multiple migrant boats setting off.
According to a statement from French authorities, the rescued individuals were brought safely to the quay in Calais, where local rescue services provided care. Officials noted that migrants often refuse assistance from French rescue teams until confronted with life-threatening situations, highlighting the dangers of these crossings.
The Channel is one of the busiest maritime routes in the world, and authorities emphasize that weather conditions can quickly make the journey extremely hazardous, even when the sea appears calm. This incident follows another recent rescue of 25 migrants attempting the journey from France and Belgium.
So far in 2026, official figures show that 3,863 people have reached the United Kingdom via small boats. The continued crossings have prompted leadership changes in the UK Border Security Command, with Martin Hewitt set to step down at the end of March after overseeing a year with 41,472 arrivals—the second-highest annual total on record.
French authorities continue to urge migrants not to attempt the dangerous crossings and stress the importance of safety and legal pathways for migration.
