France completes acquisition of Atos strategic activities
France has finalized the purchase of strategic activities from the French IT group Atos, creating a state-owned entity named Bull. The acquisition, valued at up to 404 million euros, consolidates the country’s capabilities in high-performance computing (HPC), quantum computing, and supercomputers, including systems used for nuclear deterrence.
The government had made a firm offer in June 2025 and now becomes the sole shareholder of Bull. Atos clarified that the transaction excludes zData, a company specializing in large-scale data solutions.
“This acquisition represents a decisive step for France’s technological sovereignty,” said Roland Lescure, the French Minister of Economy. Emmanuel Le Roux, CEO of Bull, expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities, highlighting plans to develop advanced supercomputers faster. Previously, Bull contributed to Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, Jupiter, inaugurated in Germany, and is now working on the Alice Recoque supercomputer, expected to be deployed in France by late 2026.
