Ford signs major energy storage partnership with EDF
Ford Motor Company has announced a new five-year agreement with EDF to supply large-scale battery energy storage systems for renewable energy projects. The partnership highlights the growing demand for energy storage technologies as countries expand investments in clean electricity and digital infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Ford’s energy division will provide up to 20 gigawatt-hours of battery storage capacity over the next five years. The systems are expected to support renewable energy operations by improving electricity stability and helping manage periods of high demand.
The deal reflects a wider global trend in which automakers are increasingly entering the energy sector. Companies that once focused mainly on electric vehicles are now exploring additional uses for battery technology, including energy storage solutions for utilities, businesses, and data centers.
Industry experts say the rapid growth of artificial intelligence services and cloud computing has significantly increased electricity demand in the United States. As a result, many technology companies and data centers are investing in backup power systems and energy storage infrastructure to maintain reliable operations.
Ford has been expanding its energy-related activities after restructuring parts of its electric vehicle business. The company previously announced plans to repurpose manufacturing facilities and battery technology for large-scale storage systems designed for renewable energy projects.
Deliveries linked to the agreement with EDF are expected to begin in 2028. EDF, which operates low-carbon energy facilities and electricity infrastructure across North America, views battery storage as a key element in supporting the transition toward cleaner and more flexible energy systems.
Analysts believe partnerships between automotive companies and energy providers could become increasingly common as global demand for electricity storage continues to grow alongside renewable energy development and advances in artificial intelligence technologies.
