Bahrain Grand Prix relocated to Malaysia after Middle East conflict disruption
Formula 1 has confirmed that the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix will be staged in Malaysia after the event was previously called off because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The announcement was made by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, confirming that the race will take place at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to October 4, 2026.
Sepang returns to the Formula 1 calendar
The decision allows Bahrain's scheduled championship round to remain on the Formula 1 calendar despite the inability to host the event in its traditional venue.
According to the FIA, Malaysian authorities approved the relocation, enabling the race to be organized at the renowned Sepang circuit, which previously hosted Formula 1 for many years before leaving the championship calendar.
The move marks a notable return of top-level Formula 1 competition to one of Asia's most celebrated racing venues.
Calendar adjusted after April cancellation
The Bahrain Grand Prix had originally been scheduled for April but was cancelled as regional security concerns intensified following the conflict in the Middle East.
Rather than removing the race entirely from the 2026 championship, Formula 1 and the FIA opted to preserve the event by transferring it to Malaysia later in the season.
Flexible approach to global sporting events
The relocation highlights Formula 1's ability to adapt its calendar when geopolitical developments affect race organization. It also demonstrates the sport's willingness to collaborate with host nations capable of accommodating major international events on short notice.
Fans can now expect the Bahrain Grand Prix to be contested at Sepang in early October, providing Malaysia with a rare opportunity to welcome Formula 1 back to one of the sport's most iconic circuits while ensuring the championship schedule remains largely intact.
