Uganda nominates Olara Otunnu for next United Nations secretary-general
Uganda has officially entered the race to lead the United Nations by nominating veteran diplomat Olara Otunnu as its candidate for secretary-general, expanding the field of contenders seeking to succeed António Guterres at the end of his second term.
Otunnu's candidacy was formally submitted to the presidents of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council, positioning the experienced diplomat among a growing list of candidates competing for one of the world's most influential international leadership roles.
Veteran diplomat enters competitive field
Olara Otunnu brings decades of diplomatic and multilateral experience to the campaign. During his career at the United Nations, he served as an Under-Secretary-General and held the position of Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, where he focused on protecting children's rights in conflict zones and promoting international humanitarian initiatives.
His extensive background in global diplomacy is expected to be a central element of Uganda's campaign as member states begin evaluating candidates for the organization's highest office.
Leadership transition begins
The selection process comes as Secretary-General António Guterres prepares to conclude his tenure at the end of the year. With Otunnu's nomination, the number of declared candidates has risen to seven, highlighting growing international interest in leading the organization during a period marked by geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, climate challenges and humanitarian crises.
The formal selection procedure is expected to accelerate in the coming days as consultations begin among UN member states.
Security Council plays decisive role
Under long-established UN procedures, the Security Council is responsible for recommending a single candidate to the General Assembly, which then formally appoints the next secretary-general.
The process typically involves multiple rounds of confidential consultations designed to assess each candidate's level of international support before a final recommendation is made.
As campaigning intensifies, candidates are expected to outline their visions for strengthening multilateral cooperation and addressing the complex global challenges facing the United Nations in the years ahead.
