Berlin police search for suspect after Pride parade vehicle attack
Police in Berlin have launched a major investigation and manhunt following an attack during the city’s Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations, after a vehicle drove into a crowd, killing one person and injuring several others.
Authorities released information about a 21-year-old man they identified as a suspected perpetrator and appealed to the public for help locating him. Police described the suspect as being linked to what they called the Islamist spectrum, while stressing that several details of the incident remained under investigation.
According to German authorities, the vehicle struck people near the Pride event on Saturday evening before coming to a stop in the Tiergarten area, close to central Berlin. Police said the vehicle was found abandoned and that they were working to determine whether the suspect acted alone or whether additional individuals were involved.
Emergency services reported that 16 people were injured, with several suffering serious injuries. Some victims were reported to be in critical condition, while investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Organizers of Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day celebrations cancelled the remaining events following the incident as a precaution and in response to the security situation.
Police described the wanted individual as approximately 1.90 metres tall, with black hair, and said he was last seen wearing a black hooded top and white trousers. Authorities asked anyone with relevant information about his location or movements to contact investigators.
Several aspects of the case remain unclear, including the exact motive, the number of people involved and the circumstances leading up to the vehicle collision. Investigators are also examining the vehicle used in the incident and gathering evidence from the scene.
The attack has prompted renewed discussions in Germany over security measures at large public gatherings, particularly events that attract large crowds in major cities.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues and emphasized that further information will be released as evidence is verified.
