Chichaoua celebrates world theatre day with a vibrant artistic evening
Chichaoua hosted a lively artistic evening on Friday to mark World Theatre Day, celebrated annually on March 27. The event took place at the city’s cultural center, bringing together theatre professionals, local artists, and enthusiasts of what is often described as the “art of arts.”
Organized by Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Department of Culture), the opening ceremony was attended by regional officials, cultural figures, and members of the artistic community. The gathering highlighted the importance of theatre as a platform for creative expression and social dialogue.
The program featured a variety of theatrical performances alongside tributes to prominent figures who have contributed to the development of Morocco’s national stage. These moments of recognition aimed to honor long-standing dedication while inspiring emerging talents.
In a message delivered on his behalf, Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid emphasized that the celebration reflects an ongoing national commitment to supporting theatre. He outlined efforts to strengthen the sector through expanded funding programs, improved production support, and the rehabilitation of cultural spaces.
The minister also pointed to reforms in the framework governing public support for theatre, designed to widen access, increase financial ceilings, and clarify selection criteria. This approach, he noted, is based on transparency, professionalism, and the pursuit of higher artistic quality.
In addition, authorities highlighted the opening of new cultural centers as key platforms for discovering local talent and encouraging artistic initiatives. The broader objective is to foster a dynamic and evolving theatrical culture capable of reflecting societal concerns while nurturing creative and engaged citizens.
The evening also included the reading of the international message for World Theatre Day and tributes to notable pioneers such as Naïma Zitan, Miloud El Habchi, and Mohamed Qaouti. A performance of the play “L’fichta” by the Artellili troupe further enriched the program.
Celebrations are set to continue over the weekend with workshops exploring the relationship between theatre and social media, as well as performances for children. The event will conclude with a session focusing on theatre, awareness, and aesthetic values.
This initiative forms part of a broader national program featuring dozens of performances across Moroccan cities, aiming to strengthen the visibility of theatre, support creative talent, and promote cultural engagement throughout society.
