Baghdad Airport temporarily closed due to heavy fog
Baghdad International Airport was forced to suspend operations from late Wednesday into early Thursday due to dense fog blanketing the Iraqi capital, the Ministry of Transport announced. According to the statement, the airport closed at 12:30 a.m. local time because visibility had dropped below acceptable safety levels.
The suspension comes as Iraq faces severe weather conditions following days of heavy rainfall, especially in the northern Kurdistan region. The storms triggered floods that caused at least three deaths — including a child — and damaged infrastructure. One of the main bridges linking Kirkuk to Baghdad collapsed under the impact of the flooding, further disrupting transportation.
Other airports were also affected by the extreme weather. Facilities in Najaf, south of Baghdad, and in Sulaymaniyah, in the autonomous Kurdistan region, temporarily halted operations for safety reasons.
Although the rains caused significant destruction, local authorities expressed hope that the precipitation could help alleviate Iraq’s chronic water shortages. The country has suffered from long-term drought, and reservoir levels have reached lows not seen since the 1930s.
