Around 7,900 migrants dead or missing on migration routes in 2025
Nearly 7,900 migrants died or went missing on migration routes worldwide in 2025, according to data released by the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM). Although this figure is lower than the record of 9,200 deaths reported in 2024, it remains alarmingly high.
The agency warned that these numbers reflect a persistent global failure to protect vulnerable people on the move. Since 2014, more than 80,000 deaths and disappearances have been documented during migration journeys across the world.
According to the IOM, the continued loss of life highlights the lack of safe and legal migration pathways, forcing many individuals to take dangerous routes, including sea crossings in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.
Despite international efforts, migration routes—particularly across the Mediterranean and other major corridors—remain highly dangerous. The report stresses that many of these deaths are preventable and calls for stronger global cooperation to address the root causes of irregular migration and improve protection measures.
