Morocco emerges as a model in seawater desalination and renewable energy

Morocco is positioning itself as a global model in seawater desalination and the promotion of renewable energies, emphasized UN Special Envoy for Water, Retno Marsudi, during her visit to Marrakech on Tuesday.

Speaking after bilateral talks with Nizar Baraka, Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, on the sidelines of the 19th World Water Congress, Marsudi praised Morocco’s approach, which combines solar and wind energy with advanced desalination technologies. The discussions also explored global water challenges and innovative solutions for sustainable resource management.

Marsudi highlighted that by 2030, 60% of Morocco’s drinking water is expected to come from desalination, compared to 30% in 2025. She emphasized that public-private partnerships play a key role in this rapid progress, sparking considerable interest during the exchanges.

The UN official described Morocco’s experience as a valuable example for other countries facing similar water scarcity issues and commended the Kingdom for its significant advancements in sustainable water management.

The congress, held under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI and co-organized by the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) until December 5, focuses on “Water in a Changing World: Innovation and Adaptation.” The event provides a platform for experts, researchers, policymakers, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to share knowledge, present innovative research, form partnerships, and develop practical solutions to address global water governance, security, and sustainability challenges.
