A 4.9-magnitude earthquake in Fuengirola triggers pre-emergency phase in Andalusia
A 4.9-magnitude earthquake recorded on Friday in the coastal town of Fuengirola has prompted the Andalusian government to activate the pre-emergency phase of its Seismic Risk Plan. The quake, felt across several provinces, caused no reported injuries but generated dozens of calls to emergency services.
Antonio Sanz, the Andalusian minister responsible for Health, Presidency and Emergencies, announced the measure on social media and shared a video from the 112 Emergency Service offering guidelines on how to respond during an earthquake.
The activation of Operational Situation 0, the lowest alert level within the seismic plan, is triggered when tremors are widely noticed by the population. It requires coordinated action among regional authorities to enhance public information and reinforce precautionary measures.
According to Sanz, the 112 hotline received alerts from multiple municipalities across the provinces of Málaga, Sevilla and Córdoba shortly after the tremor. None of the reports included injuries or significant damage.
A spokesperson for the emergency service said that nearly fifty calls were logged. The earthquake was felt in Málaga city as well as in towns such as Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Marbella and Alhaurín de la Torre. Reports also came from Alcalá de Guadaíra and Constantina in the province of Sevilla, and from Puente Genil, Nueva Carteya and Córdoba city in the province of Córdoba.
Updated data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) confirmed the quake’s magnitude at 4.9 — revised from initial measurements of 4.2 and 4.8. It occurred at 10:38 a.m. local time (09:38 UTC) at a depth of 78 kilometres.
The IGN reported that the tremor was felt in multiple localities including Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Mijas, Alhaurín el Grande, Algarrobo, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Nerja and Antequera in Málaga province, as well as in several towns in Sevilla and Córdoba.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, although no additional incidents have been reported.
