Brussels Airport halts flights briefly after drone spotted near airfield

Air traffic at Brussels Airport was temporarily suspended on Friday morning after a drone was detected flying close to the airfield, Belgian newspaper La Libre reported. Operations were halted at around 10:00 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) for roughly 15 minutes as a precautionary measure, airspace authority Skeyes confirmed.

Officials said the short interruption resulted in minimal disruption for passengers and caused no significant delays in scheduled flights.

The incident comes amid a surge of drone-related disturbances across Europe, including sightings near airports and military installations. Belgium has faced several such incursions in recent months, among them one over a military base that prompted concern from security officials.

Some European authorities have linked the uptick in drone activity to hybrid warfare tactics and the ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine. Moscow has denied any responsibility for the episodes.

In response to the growing threat, Belgium’s Defense Ministry announced plans to strengthen its drone interception systems and update related security procedures.
