ONCF achieves major milestone in railway safety under Wiam Ghrabi
Rabat, December 5, 2025 – The Moroccan National Railway Office (ONCF) has taken a significant step forward in railway safety, unveiling a comprehensive roadmap aimed at reducing incidents by 60% over the next five years. Wiam Ghrabi, Director of Strategic Planning at ONCF, presented the initiative during the World Railway Safety Congress in Rabat.
The strategy relies on a shift from reactive to proactive safety management, leveraging advanced digital technologies. The network now operates with 4,400 fixed cameras across stations and railway areas, 6,630 onboard cameras on new trains, and 1,400 monitoring devices. Around a hundred specialized agents complement these systems, ensuring real-time security oversight and incident tracking.
Intelligent systems are being integrated to detect suspicious behavior, identify vulnerable zones, optimize field responses, and counter intrusions or hostile acts. Drones, smart sensors, a centralized monitoring network, and an analytical platform enhance risk anticipation and reinforce network resilience.
Early results indicate tangible improvements: a 7% drop in incidents, 5% fewer operational disruptions, 40% reduction in material damage, and a 13% decrease in hostile acts within and around railway facilities. These outcomes reflect ONCF’s commitment to a fully digitalized, performance-driven, and preventive safety model.
Through this initiative, ONCF strengthens its public service mission, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable mobility while positioning itself as a regional leader capable of exporting its modernized railway safety model.
