Morocco's Ports in 2022: Jorf Lasfar Leads the Way in Goods Traffic
Morocco's primary port, Jorf Lasfar, experienced a decline in goods volume in 2022 but still secured the top position among the country's ports for total tonnage, according to a recent report. Despite a 3% year-over-year drop, Jorf Lasfar handled 34 million metric tons of cargo, surpassing the second-place Port of Casablanca.
This decrease reflects a broader slowdown for Moroccan ports in 2022. Across all ports, total tonnage decreased by 4.2% compared to 2021 levels, totaling 87.2 million metric tons, as reported by the National Ports Agency and Moroccan Ports Competitiveness Observatory.
However, there is a positive note in the realm of imports. The value of imported goods increased by nearly 40% for the year, reaching 737.72 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $72 billion). This surge in imports was driven by significant increases in key products such as cereals and hydrocarbons. In terms of volume, total imports increased by 2.4% for the year.
On the contrary, exports moved in the opposite direction. Hindered by a sharp decline in international sales of phosphates and related products, export tonnage plummeted by 18.5% in 2022. Nevertheless, the total export value managed to climb by nearly 30%, reflecting higher prices.
Looking ahead to 2023, the performance of Jorf Lasfar and Morocco's other leading ports may depend on the stabilization of volatile commodities markets and global trade flows. Despite challenges, Jorf Lasfar remains well-positioned to maintain its status as the cornerstone of Morocco's port system.
