Dozens Hurt as Car Rams Liverpool Victory Crowd; Police Rule Out Terrorism
Dozens of people, including children, were injured on Monday evening when a vehicle drove into a crowd celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League title in northwest England.
According to Merseyside Police, a 53-year-old British man was arrested at the scene. Authorities ruled out terrorism and described the event as an isolated incident, with no other suspects being sought.
Masses of jubilant fans had gathered in Liverpool to witness a victory parade featuring an open-top bus carrying the team. The celebration turned to panic as a gray minivan sped into the crowd near the conclusion of the event.
Videos circulating online captured the moment the vehicle struck fans dressed in red. Witnesses reported chaos as onlookers attempted to stop the driver by damaging the car.
Emergency services confirmed that 27 people were taken to hospitals, including one adult and one child who sustained serious injuries. Four individuals, including a child, had to be rescued from beneath the vehicle. Another 20 were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes. One fan, Harry Rashid, who attended with his wife and children, recounted hearing loud thuds as the car struck pedestrians. Others described people being chased, treated roadside, and carried on stretchers.
Police were first alerted shortly after 6 p.m. and quickly secured the area. Officials emphasized that a comprehensive traffic control plan had been in place and urged the public not to share graphic footage or spread speculation online.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, calling it “appalling,” and expressed gratitude to emergency responders. Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson described the event as casting a "dark shadow" over an otherwise joyful day.
Liverpool FC, along with Everton FC and the Premier League, expressed solidarity with the victims and thanked emergency services.
The incident occurred on a public holiday, during a 10-mile parade route lined with fans. Authorities have now cleared the scene and urged people to avoid overwhelming hospital switchboards as families of the injured are being contacted.
