Bayt Mal Al Quds partners with Palestine to aid Gaza’s orphaned and amputee children

Over 38,000 Palestinian children have been orphaned since the onset of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023.

The Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency has joined forces with the Palestinian Ministry of Social Development to address the dire needs of orphaned and amputee children affected by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. A formal agreement was signed on Monday, outlining collaborative efforts to implement social projects aimed at assisting these vulnerable children.

The primary focus of this initiative is to support children who have lost limbs as a result of the conflict, enabling them to lead more normal lives. This support will extend to psychological assistance through the agency’s mental health clinic, designed to foster emotional well-being in the aftermath of trauma.

Additionally, the agreement encompasses programs specifically tailored for orphaned children enrolled in the Al-Quds Orphan Sponsorship Project, thereby broadening the scope of support available to those affected.

The ongoing conflict has unleashed unprecedented devastation, with Gaza's health ministry reporting that more than 38,000 children have become orphans since the war began. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has indicated that Gaza now holds the grim distinction of having the highest number of amputee children in contemporary history.

The signing ceremony took place in Ramallah, attended by key figures including Mohamed Salem Cherkaoui, the director of the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, and Palestinian Minister of Social Development Samah Hamad. Morocco’s Ambassador to Palestine, Abdel Rahim Meziane, was also present to witness this important partnership.

Minister Hamad emphasized the significance of this agreement in providing crucial support to child victims of the devastating conflict. She expressed gratitude towards the agency for its ongoing humanitarian efforts in aiding the people of Al Quds (Jerusalem) and other war-affected individuals.

Cherkaoui remarked that this initiative is emblematic of Morocco’s ongoing commitment to assist Palestinians in Gaza as they grapple with the consequences of the war. Funded by Morocco’s Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, the initiative has secured a grant of $200,000 to facilitate its operations.

Furthermore, Cherkaoui elaborated on the agreement, highlighting its provisions for caring for orphaned children in Al Quds—a project that has been active since 2008. In addition to online mental health support, partner centers in Jerusalem and Gaza will offer in-person assistance to affected children, ensuring a comprehensive approach to their recovery and well-being.
