Iran warns UN nuclear watchdog over attacks on Bushehr plant
Iran’s atomic energy chief, Mohammad Eslami, has criticized the UN nuclear watchdog for inaction, warning that attacks on the country’s nuclear facilities could have severe consequences.
In a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director, Eslami said the Bushehr nuclear power plant, Iran’s only operational reactor, has been targeted four times, with the latest incident on April 4 resulting in the death of a security staff member and injuries to others.
“These attacks could lead to the release of radioactive material and have irreparable effects on people, the environment, and neighboring countries,” Eslami wrote. He described the incidents as a clear violation of international law and argued that the IAEA’s expressions of concern alone are insufficient, suggesting that failure to act may encourage further aggression.
The warning highlights ongoing tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and raises concerns about the safety and security of nuclear installations in conflict-prone regions.
