Elbit Systems to begin drone deliveries to Romania after delays
Israel’s Elbit Systems is preparing to start deliveries of Watchkeeper X drones to Romania under a 1.89 billion lei ($428.75 million) contract, following delays that raised concerns from Romanian officials.
The agreement, signed in 2022 for seven unmanned aerial systems, was originally scheduled for deliveries to begin in 2025. Romanian defense authorities had threatened to cancel the deal due to delays.
Elbit Systems stated that despite the challenges posed by Israel’s exceptional security situation—considered a force majeure by customers worldwide—the project remains a high priority. The drones, manufactured in Romania, are set to undergo final acceptance tests toward the end of April, pending regulatory approval.
Romania, an EU and NATO member, shares a 650-kilometer border with Ukraine and has experienced drones breaching its airspace, with fragments landing on its territory amid ongoing regional tensions.
