Novatek creates new company to build LNG vessels amid sanctions pressure
Russia’s leading liquefied natural gas producer, Novatek, has established a new company to develop its own fleet of vessels and floating infrastructure, as it faces ongoing challenges linked to international sanctions.
The newly created entity, focused on engineering and shipbuilding, aims to address a shortage of specialized tankers needed to transport liquefied natural gas, particularly in Arctic conditions. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign technology and strengthen domestic capabilities in the energy sector.
Since the imposition of Western sanctions in 2022, Russia has experienced limited access to ice-class LNG carriers, which are essential for navigating frozen waters. This constraint has slowed the expansion of key projects, including Arctic LNG developments.
To overcome these challenges, Novatek is investing in local shipbuilding capacity, working alongside Russian industrial partners. Advanced ice-class vessels, capable of breaking through thick ice, are considered critical for maintaining exports and supporting long-term energy ambitions.
The move underscores how geopolitical tensions are reshaping global energy logistics, pushing companies to adapt by building more self-sufficient supply chains.
