Hamas has handed over the bodies of four Israeli hostages who died in Gaza, in exchange for Israel’s agreement to release over 600 Palestinian prisoners as part of a fragile ceasefire following fifteen months of conflict.

This exchange is the latest development in a truce mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, which took effect on January 19 in the Gaza Strip. The first phase of the ceasefire is set to conclude on March 1.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed Hamas’s announcement that Israel would receive the remains of four hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack and transported to Gaza. Unlike previous exchanges, the transfer will occur "without Hamas ceremonies" as per Israel's demands.

Israeli media identified the hostages as Ohad Yahalomi, Tsachi Idan, Itzik Elgarat, and Shlomo Mansour, aligning with Hamas's earlier statement. According to Palestinian sources, 625 prisoners will be freed in exchange. Israel's prison authority has initiated preparations for their release.

The planned exchange includes 602 Palestinian prisoners who were due for release on February 22, along with six Israelis freed by Hamas, plus 23 women and minors. All releases will occur simultaneously with the transfer of the hostage bodies.

Last-minute delays previously occurred, with Israel halting planned prisoner releases on February 24, citing its demand for an end to Hamas’s public ceremonies, where hostages were paraded before crowds. These displays have been condemned by Israel, the UN, and the Red Cross.

So far, the ceasefire has led to the return of 29 Israeli hostages, including four deceased, out of a total of 33, with eight confirmed dead. By March 1, the remaining hostages are expected to be exchanged for approximately 1,100 Palestinian prisoners, from a total of 1,900.

Uncertain Future of the Ceasefire

Despite the ongoing truce, tensions remain high, with both sides accusing each other of violations. The Israeli military reported strikes on projectile launch sites in Gaza following an earlier attack that landed within Palestinian territory.

Negotiations for the second phase of the truce, scheduled to start on March 2, which aims for a permanent end to hostilities and the release of all remaining hostages, have yet to be finalized.

Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, mentioned "significant progress" toward resuming negotiations. Israel is reportedly dispatching a negotiation team to Doha or Cairo, although Israeli officials have not confirmed this.

Following Israel's suspension of Palestinian prisoner releases, Hamas accused it of endangering the entire ceasefire agreement and called on mediators to intervene. The group previously stated its willingness to release all remaining hostages in a single exchange during the second phase.

Of the 251 individuals abducted in Israel on October 7, 62 remain in Gaza, including 35 confirmed dead, according to Israeli military reports.
