At least twelve police officers were killed following a car bombing targeting a police post in northwestern Pakistan, according to security officials.

The attack took place in the city of Bannu, located in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region that has experienced repeated militant violence in recent years. Authorities said the explosion was followed by an armed confrontation between security forces and militants.

Local officials confirmed that several police personnel were trapped under the rubble after the blast. Rescue teams later managed to recover survivors, with three officers reportedly transferred to hospital for medical treatment.

The bombing caused extensive damage to the police facility and surrounding structures, while residents described scenes of panic and confusion immediately after the explosion.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, northwestern Pakistan has long faced security challenges linked to militant organizations operating near the Afghan border. The region has witnessed numerous assaults targeting police stations, military installations, and public institutions.

Pakistani authorities have intensified security operations in recent years to counter armed groups and restore stability in affected areas. Despite these efforts, attacks against law enforcement personnel continue to pose serious security concerns.

The incident has renewed discussions about regional security and the ongoing threat of extremism in parts of the country. Government officials condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the bombing and identify those responsible.
