Aliko Dangote considers Kenya for major East African refinery project
African business magnate Aliko Dangote is reportedly considering Kenya as the location for a large oil refinery project aimed at strengthening energy infrastructure in East Africa.
According to reports, the proposed refinery could process up to 650,000 barrels of oil per day, making it one of the largest industrial energy projects on the continent. Dangote indicated that the coastal city of Mombasa is currently viewed as a strong candidate due to its deep-water port and strategic position for regional trade.
The project would represent a major investment estimated at between 15 and 17 billion dollars. Analysts believe such infrastructure could significantly reduce East Africa’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products, most of which currently come from the Middle East.
The discussions come as regional governments seek to improve energy security and reduce vulnerability to supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions and volatility in global oil markets.
Kenyan President William Ruto has previously spoken about regional cooperation on refining capacity, including possible joint projects involving neighboring East African countries.
Dangote, whose refinery operations in Nigeria are among the largest in Africa, stated that government support would be essential for replicating a similar model in East Africa. He also highlighted Kenya’s large economy and growing fuel demand as important advantages.
If the project moves forward, it could transform the regional energy landscape by increasing local refining capacity, creating industrial jobs, and strengthening trade connections across East Africa.
Experts note that expanding domestic refining infrastructure could help African economies better manage fuel prices and reduce exposure to international supply shocks.
