Four migrants escape from Paris-Vincennes Detention Centre

Four migrants escaped from the administrative detention centre of Paris-Vincennes Administrative Detention Centre during the night between Saturday and Sunday, according to French police sources.

The incident occurred only a few weeks after another escape involving several detainees at the same facility, raising renewed concerns over security conditions and infrastructure management inside immigration detention centres in France.

According to preliminary reports, the four individuals managed to flee through the metal rooftops of the centre, which is currently undergoing renovation work. Authorities stated that four other detainees also attempted to escape but were intercepted before leaving the premises.

The Paris-Vincennes detention centre is one of the largest facilities in France dedicated to holding foreign nationals awaiting deportation or administrative procedures related to immigration enforcement. French law allows authorities to detain undocumented migrants when there is a risk that they may avoid deportation measures.

The maximum detention period generally reaches 90 days, although it can be extended in specific cases linked to terrorism-related convictions.

The latest incident follows a previous escape at the same centre in late April, when several migrants reportedly fled through a smoke extraction hatch. Some of them were later arrested near the facility.

Immigration detention centres, commonly known in France as CRA facilities, remain at the centre of political and humanitarian debates. Human rights organizations and migrant support groups regularly call for improved living conditions and stronger oversight, while authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining immigration control and public security.

According to associations working within these facilities, more than 40,000 people were held in French administrative detention centres during 2024.
