Rabat National Zoo Marks 13 Years of Wildlife Conservation Success

The National Zoo in Rabat has emerged as a cornerstone of Morocco's biodiversity preservation efforts, welcoming over 6 million visitors since opening its doors in 2012. As the zoo celebrates its 13th anniversary this January, it stands as a testament to the country's commitment to environmental protection and education.

Home to more than 2,000 animals representing 190 species, the zoological park continues to draw approximately 500,000 visitors annually. The facility has organized special celebratory events running from January 9-14, focusing on environmental education and fostering discovery among younger generations.

The zoo's conservation strategy has yielded impressive results, particularly in its breeding programs. In 2024 alone, the facility celebrated the birth of 220 animals, including Atlas Lions, Bald Ibises, Magot Monkeys, Thompson's Gazelles, Addax, and Cuffe Sheep. Additionally, the zoo expanded its collection through partnerships with international institutions, acquiring 50 new animals including wild dogs, Saharan antelopes, reptiles, and various bird species.

Visitors can explore five distinct biodiversity zones within the facility: Atlas Mountain, Savannah, Desert, Wetland, and Tropical Forest. Each biozone offers an authentic simulation of its respective ecosystem, complete with indigenous wildlife and natural characteristics.

Looking ahead, the zoo's 2025 strategic plan emphasizes digital transformation through connected solutions designed to meet contemporary visitor needs. The facility continues to strengthen its scientific research initiatives, focusing particularly on endangered Moroccan species.

The zoo's success aligns with Morocco's broader environmental initiatives, including the Green Generation 2020-2030 and Forest of Morocco programs launched in 2020. These efforts underscore the nation's dedication to addressing climate change challenges while preserving its rich natural heritage.

Through its combination of conservation, education, and research, the Rabat National Zoo has established itself as not only the city's most visited attraction but also as a vital institution in Morocco's environmental protection framework.
