OpenAI and Anthropic escalate rivalry with free coding AI offers

OpenAI and Anthropic launched competing promotions for their artificial intelligence coding platforms on May 13, intensifying the battle for enterprise developers as demand for agentic software engineering tools accelerates across the technology sector.

OpenAI moved first by offering eligible enterprise customers two months of free access to its Codex platform for new users who register within 30 days. Sam Altman promoted the campaign publicly, describing Codex as the company’s strongest AI development product and encouraging businesses to adopt it more rapidly. Companies must apply through a dedicated form, with OpenAI reviewing submissions before granting access. The promotion specifically targets corporate technical leaders and development teams evaluating large scale AI coding deployments.

The financial incentive could be significant for large organizations. A company with dozens of developers operating under a standard enterprise licensing model could save thousands of dollars during the two month promotional period. OpenAI’s messaging also directly appealed to chief technology officers and engineering managers responsible for selecting long term AI infrastructure tools.

Anthropic responded within hours by expanding usage limits for Claude Code subscribers. The company announced a 50 percent increase in weekly capacity for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise customers using named-seat plans. The changes took effect immediately and apply across command line interfaces, integrated development environment extensions, desktop applications and web access. Free tier users were excluded from the offer.

The increase marks Anthropic’s third capacity expansion in just over a month. The company previously removed peak hour restrictions for premium users and doubled five hour rate limits earlier in May following a computing agreement with SpaceX. The partnership gave Anthropic access to the Colossus 1 data center in Tennessee, which reportedly hosts more than 220,000 Nvidia graphics processing units used for AI model training and inference.

The simultaneous promotions reflect the growing importance of AI coding systems in the broader enterprise software market. Anthropic is reportedly seeking new financing at a valuation approaching $950 billion, while OpenAI reached an $852 billion valuation during a funding round completed in March. Investors increasingly view coding assistants as one of the most commercially viable uses of generative AI technology.

Independent benchmark testing has added to the competitive pressure between the two companies. Comparative evaluations found that Codex can complete equivalent coding tasks while consuming three to four times fewer tokens than Claude Code, reducing operational costs under similar pricing structures. Anthropic argues that its Opus models deliver stronger first-attempt reliability on large multi-file software projects. The rapid succession of pricing adjustments and usage incentives suggests both companies are relying on aggressive commercial tactics alongside technical performance to secure long term enterprise customers.
