Meta and Google fund US children’s groups amid rising concerns over social media risks
Technology companies Meta Platforms and Google have supported several well-known U.S. children’s organizations in educational initiatives focused on responsible technology use, even as concerns grow about the impact of social media on young users.
Reports indicate that these companies have provided significant funding to groups such as Sesame Street, Girl Scouts, and Highlights magazine to develop programs teaching children and parents how to use digital platforms in moderation. These initiatives often use familiar characters, engaging stories, and interactive materials aimed at promoting healthier online habits.
However, critics argue that there is a contradiction between these educational campaigns and the design of social media platforms, which are often built to maximize user engagement and screen time. Experts in child health have raised concerns that children under 12 may be particularly vulnerable to excessive use of smartphones and apps designed to encourage constant interaction.
Parent advocacy groups have also questioned whether partnerships with trusted educational brands may influence public perception, making it appear that technology companies are more focused on safety than critics believe. At the same time, legal challenges continue in the United States, where lawsuits accuse major tech firms of contributing to negative effects on youth mental health through addictive design features.
Despite criticism, Meta and Google maintain that their collaborations with educational organizations aim to promote digital literacy and provide families with tools to navigate the online environment more safely.
