Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces mark 70 years of modernization, humanitarian work and strategic growth
Morocco is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco, an institution that continues to evolve under a long-term strategy of modernization, humanitarian engagement, and international cooperation.
Established in 1956 by the late King Mohammed V and currently led under the directives of HM King Mohammed VI, the Royal Armed Forces have developed into a highly structured military force focused on operational efficiency, strategic innovation, and national sovereignty. Over the decades, the institution has expanded its capabilities while maintaining its core values of loyalty, discipline, and service to the nation.
Beyond national defence and territorial integrity, the armed forces play an increasingly important role in humanitarian operations. In recent years, they have been actively deployed during natural disasters, providing rapid response, logistical support, and assistance to affected populations in coordination with civilian authorities.
A key pillar of their evolution is ongoing military modernization. This includes the acquisition of advanced defence systems such as Apache AH-64E combat helicopters, reinforcing Morocco’s technological capabilities and strengthening its defence infrastructure. The country is also pursuing a broader strategy aimed at developing a domestic defence industry to enhance strategic autonomy.
Social programs have also been expanded within the military ecosystem. Housing initiatives led by the Military Housing and Equipment Agency have benefited tens of thousands of families, improving living conditions for service members and their households. At the same time, military service continues to attract young people, offering training and professional development opportunities that support social integration and employability.
On the international stage, Morocco remains an active contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions and regularly participates in joint military exercises such as African Lion. These efforts highlight its growing role as a regional stability actor and strategic partner in international security cooperation.
The establishment of advanced research and defense studies institutions further reflects Morocco’s commitment to strengthening strategic thinking and military expertise. Overall, the Royal Armed Forces continue to position themselves as a modern, adaptive, and globally engaged institution serving national security and development goals.
