US blocks UN call for Gaza ceasefire amid ongoing conflict
the United States vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, alongside unrestricted humanitarian aid access. While all other 14 council members supported the draft amid a growing humanitarian crisis affecting over two million people, the US opposed it, insisting the resolution failed to condemn Hamas or call for its disarmament and withdrawal from Gaza.
Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated the resolution undermined efforts led by Washington to negotiate a ceasefire. Israel, a key US ally and weapons recipient, has rejected calls for a permanent ceasefire, emphasizing that Hamas cannot remain in Gaza. Israeli strikes and clashes continue, causing significant casualties, including civilians.
British Ambassador Barbara Woodward criticized Israel's expanded military operations and strict aid restrictions as unjustifiable and harmful to peace prospects. Meanwhile, Hamas condemned the US veto, accusing Washington of biased support for Israel. The draft also called for the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas.
The conflict escalated after a deadly Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which killed over 1,200 Israelis and resulted in numerous hostages. Israel’s military response has resulted in more than 54,000 Palestinian deaths, mainly civilians, according to Gaza health officials. Aid deliveries resumed in May under heavy restrictions, with a controversial new system backed by the US and Israel but rejected by international aid groups over neutrality concerns.
Despite diplomatic tensions, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher urged open crossings and unhindered aid delivery to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. A similar resolution may soon be presented to the UN General Assembly, where veto power does not exist and passage appears likely.
