Music industry introduces AI labels to bring transparency to streaming platforms
The global music industry is moving to establish clearer rules around artificial intelligence-generated content, with major professional organisations proposing a new labelling system designed to inform audiences about how much AI contributes to musical creations.
The initiative aims to improve transparency, particularly on streaming platforms, where the rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence has raised questions about authorship, creativity and the future role of human artists.
Two labels designed to identify AI involvement
Several leading music organisations have introduced a framework based on two distinct labels: one for works fully or largely created through artificial intelligence and another for songs where AI has been used as a supporting tool alongside significant human input.
The first category, labelled “AI-generated,” would apply to tracks where artificial intelligence produces all or most of the creative elements. This includes music created entirely through text prompts, as well as songs where AI generates key components such as the main vocal performance or essential instrumental sections.
The second category, “AI-assisted,” would cover productions where human creativity remains central but artificial intelligence is used during parts of the creative process. Under this classification, major instrumental contributions and vocal performances would still need to come from human creators.
Industry leaders seek common standards
The project is being driven by several influential organisations, including the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with support from the Grammy Awards organisation and representatives of independent music communities.
By developing shared terminology, industry leaders hope to create a consistent approach that can be adopted by digital platforms, allowing listeners to better understand the origin of the music they consume.
A response to the rise of generative AI
The arrival of powerful AI music tools has transformed the way songs can be produced, making it possible to generate vocals, melodies and complete arrangements in a matter of minutes. While many professionals see potential benefits for creativity and production, others have raised concerns about the impact on artists, intellectual property rights and the value of human performance.
The proposed labels represent an attempt to balance technological innovation with recognition of human contribution. Rather than banning AI-created music, the industry is seeking clearer identification rules.
Streaming platforms at the centre of the debate
Streaming services are expected to play a key role in implementing such transparency measures. As millions of songs are uploaded online each year, platforms face growing pressure to distinguish between traditional recordings, AI-assisted works and fully synthetic creations.
The adoption of these labels could mark a significant step toward a new standard for digital music distribution, as the industry adapts to an era where artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly common part of the creative process.
