Macron calls for constant vigilance against antisemitism during Dreyfus commemoration
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for unwavering vigilance against the resurgence of antisemitism, warning that combating hatred remains a collective responsibility. His remarks came during France’s first national day of commemoration marking the judicial recognition of Alfred Dreyfus’ innocence, exactly 120 years after the landmark ruling by the Court of Cassation.
President warns against the resurgence of antisemitism
Speaking at the official ceremony on Sunday, Macron said that the return of antisemitism demands "constant vigilance" from society.
The president stressed that prejudice and hatred directed at Jewish communities remain a threat that requires sustained public awareness and civic responsibility.
His speech linked the historical lessons of the Dreyfus Affair to contemporary concerns over antisemitic acts and discrimination in France.
Honouring Alfred Dreyfus and historical justice
The ceremony marked the first official national commemoration dedicated to the recognition of Alfred Dreyfus' innocence, a milestone in French history.
Dreyfus, a Jewish army officer, was wrongly convicted of treason in the late nineteenth century amid a climate of intense antisemitism. His conviction became one of France’s most significant judicial and political scandals before being overturned by the Court of Cassation.
The anniversary commemorates the final legal recognition of his innocence, which has become a symbol of the fight against injustice and discrimination.
Tribute to the Righteous who protected Jewish people
Macron also called for greater recognition of the Righteous Among the Nations, urging that their names be displayed in every place where they helped protect Jewish people during the Nazi occupation of France.
The initiative aims to preserve the memory of those who risked their lives to save others during the Holocaust and to reinforce the importance of historical remembrance in combating hatred and intolerance.
The president said preserving these memories remains essential to strengthening democratic values and preventing the repetition of past injustices.
