Clermont-Ferrand hit by new shooting linked to suspected drug trafficking network

Five young men were wounded by gunfire during the night from Sunday to Monday near a suspected drug trafficking location in Clermont-Ferrand, in central France. Two of the victims suffered serious injuries, according to local judicial authorities, as investigators examine the possibility of a targeted attack linked to the narcotics trade.

The shooting adds to growing concerns over violent incidents connected to drug networks in the city, which has experienced an increase in clashes and suspected criminal settlements in recent months.

Shooting near suspected drug dealing site

The incident occurred shortly before midnight in the La Gauthière district, located in the northeastern part of Clermont-Ferrand. According to prosecutor Eric Serfass, five men aged between 18 and 27 were present at or near a suspected drug sales point when gunfire broke out.

All five victims were hit by bullets, with two described as seriously injured. Authorities also indicated that some of those wounded were already known to the justice system.

The suspected attackers fled the scene by car. Police officers recovered numerous shell casings, and the judicial police have been placed in charge of the investigation, which is being conducted under the classification of attempted murder.

Growing concerns over narcotics-related violence

The shooting comes amid a broader wave of violence affecting Clermont-Ferrand since 2025, with authorities linking several incidents to disputes surrounding drug trafficking.

La Gauthière, where the shooting took place, is located near the Les Carmes neighbourhood, another area that has experienced tensions and criminal violence associated with suspected narcotics activity.

Recent incidents have heightened concerns among residents and local officials about the impact of organised drug networks on public safety.

Authorities investigate possible criminal dispute

Investigators are now working to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities of those responsible and the motive behind the shooting.

The recovery of ammunition casings and the location of the incident near a suspected drug sales point are key elements being examined as part of the inquiry.

Security challenges facing the city

Clermont-Ferrand, a city of around 275,000 inhabitants and the regional capital of Auvergne, has faced increasing pressure from drug-related violence. The latest shooting highlights the challenges confronting law enforcement agencies seeking to disrupt trafficking networks and prevent further escalation.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to focus on identifying links between the victims, possible rival groups and wider criminal networks operating in the area.
