Édouard Philippe calls for a sovereign France-made firefighting aircraft fleet

Former French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has called for the development of a “sovereign” firefighting aircraft to strengthen France’s ability to respond to increasingly severe wildfires.

The Horizons party leader and candidate for the 2027 presidential election argued that the country should no longer rely on ageing Canadair aircraft or international production schedules to protect its territory during major fire emergencies.

A call for greater industrial independence

In a statement published on social media, Édouard Philippe highlighted the challenges facing France’s current firefighting aircraft fleet, describing existing Canadairs as ageing assets that are increasingly difficult to maintain and replace.

“The security of France cannot depend on the orders of others,” he said, arguing that the country needs its own long-term industrial solution to guarantee emergency response capabilities.

According to the former prime minister, global demand for firefighting aircraft is increasing, creating longer waiting times for new deliveries at a moment when climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense wildfire events.

Renewing France’s firefighting capabilities

Philippe said the next generation of Canadair-type aircraft should be developed through French expertise and supported by domestic companies working on innovative aviation projects.

He specifically mentioned firms including Toulouse Positive Aviation, Hynaero and Kepplair Evolution as potential contributors to the renewal of France’s firefighting aviation resources.

The politician said he would support these companies in developing solutions capable of strengthening France’s ability to combat large-scale forest fires.

Climate change increases pressure on emergency services

The debate over firefighting aircraft comes as France faces growing challenges linked to extreme weather conditions and rising wildfire risks.

Longer periods of drought, higher temperatures and changing climate patterns have increased pressure on emergency services, requiring faster and more efficient intervention tools.

A modernised aircraft fleet is seen by supporters of the initiative as a key element in adapting national protection systems to future environmental threats.

A strategic issue ahead of the 2027 election

Philippe’s proposal places industrial sovereignty and climate resilience at the centre of his campaign priorities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The issue also reflects a wider European debate over reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical equipment, particularly in sectors linked to national security and crisis management.
