Mercedes-Benz expands Hungarian plant with €1 billion investment to boost global competitiveness
Mercedes-Benz is expanding its manufacturing footprint in Hungary with a €1 billion investment aimed at increasing production capacity, improving efficiency and strengthening its position in an increasingly competitive global automotive market.
The German carmaker announced on Monday that its Kecskemet facility will undergo a major expansion that will double output and transform the site into Mercedes-Benz’s largest production plant in Europe after the upgrade.
Hungarian factory becomes strategic production centre
Located in Kecskemet, the Mercedes-Benz plant will play a central role in the company’s future manufacturing strategy, particularly with the planned production of the new electric C-Class model.
Following the expansion, the Hungarian facility will become the company’s second-largest factory worldwide, behind its global leader, while providing greater flexibility to respond to changing market conditions.
Mercedes-Benz said the investment reflects the need to adapt to growing pressure in the automotive sector, where manufacturers are competing on technology, production costs and the transition toward electric mobility.
Efficiency drive amid global automotive competition
The automotive industry is facing significant transformation as traditional manufacturers compete with emerging electric vehicle producers, particularly from China, while also managing rising production costs and shifting consumer demand.
Mercedes-Benz’s investment in Hungary is designed to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the company’s ability to adjust production according to market fluctuations.
The expanded facility will provide additional manufacturing capabilities at a time when automakers are seeking more agile production networks and greater control over supply chains.
Electric vehicle strategy gains momentum
The introduction of electric vehicle production at the Kecskemet plant highlights Mercedes-Benz’s continued transition toward electrification.
The company is investing across its global manufacturing network to integrate electric models into existing facilities while maintaining competitiveness in premium vehicle segments.
The Hungarian expansion is expected to support the production of next-generation vehicles and reinforce Europe’s role in Mercedes-Benz’s electric mobility strategy.
Hungary strengthens role in European automotive sector
The investment further confirms Hungary’s growing importance as an automotive manufacturing hub in Central Europe.
The country has attracted major international carmakers and suppliers due to its skilled workforce, industrial infrastructure and strategic location within European supply chains.
With the Kecskemet expansion, Mercedes-Benz aims to create a more resilient and efficient production network capable of responding to the challenges of the global automotive transformation.
