France to summon Russian ambassador over alleged cyber campaign targeting Europe
France will summon Russia's ambassador in the coming days following what Paris describes as a large-scale cyber campaign allegedly conducted by Russian intelligence services against several European countries, including France.
The announcement signals a further escalation in diplomatic tensions between Paris and Moscow, with French authorities also preparing a new round of targeted sanctions.
Paris accuses Russia of coordinated cyber operations
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the cyber campaign targeted around ten European countries and was allegedly intended to support espionage and sabotage activities.
Speaking on French television, Barrot announced that Russia's ambassador to France would be formally summoned to explain the allegations.
The move reflects France's increasingly firm response to cyber threats affecting national security and critical infrastructure.
Sanctions planned against individuals and entities
In addition to the diplomatic summons, the French government announced plans to impose sanctions on nine individuals and four entities that it says were involved in the cyber campaign.
According to Barrot, French authorities believe the operation was orchestrated by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).
The sanctions are expected to target those considered responsible for planning or supporting the alleged cyber activities.
Cybersecurity remains a growing European concern
The latest accusations underscore growing concerns across Europe over cyber espionage, digital sabotage and foreign interference.
European governments have increasingly strengthened cybersecurity cooperation and expanded sanctions against individuals and organisations suspected of conducting malicious cyber operations.
The French government's latest measures highlight the importance it places on protecting national institutions and coordinating responses with European partners.
