US announces new foundation for Gaza aid, bypassing UN

The United States revealed Thursday that a new foundation will soon announce plans to provide aid to Gaza, bypassing the United Nations due to severe shortages caused by Israel's two-month blockade. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce shared that the foundation would be non-governmental and would make an announcement soon but refrained from offering further details.

Bruce emphasized the need for swift food aid to reach Gaza in a manner that ensures it reaches the intended recipients without falling into the hands of groups like Hamas. She highlighted the growing concerns about the diminishing supplies of essentials such as fuel and medicine, exacerbated by the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza, which houses 2.4 million Palestinians. The UN and other humanitarian organizations have been warning about these shortages.

Israel disputes claims of a humanitarian crisis and maintains its stance on intensifying pressure on Hamas. Following the deadly attack on Israel by militants on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military has devastated much of Gaza’s infrastructure.

Israel has long criticized the United Nations, accusing it of bias, and has restricted the operations of UN agencies, particularly the one assisting Palestinian refugees. Regarding the absence of the UN’s involvement, Bruce remarked, "Endless press releases and appeasement of Hamas have not delivered food, medicine, or shelter to those in need."

In related news, US President Donald Trump has hinted at a significant announcement ahead of his upcoming tour of Gulf Arab countries. A foundation named the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" was reportedly established in Switzerland in February. The foundation's exact goals remain unclear, though Swiss reports mention its intention to hire individuals for aid distribution.

Amnesty International’s Swiss branch expressed concern, arguing that any foundation contributing to Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory would violate international law and fail to uphold human rights standards.

Israeli officials have recently suggested a broader military operation in Gaza, where the civilian population has been almost entirely displaced. Israel's far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, stated that the territory would be "completely destroyed." Meanwhile, European governments, UN experts, and China have expressed concerns about Israel's plans, while the Trump administration has refrained from criticism, instead blaming Hamas for the situation. Since taking office, President Trump has significantly reduced US international aid.
