Teen critically injured and two children wounded in Philadelphia rec center shooting
A violent altercation outside a West Philadelphia recreation center on Wednesday afternoon left a teenage boy in critical condition and injured two children and a facility worker. The incident unfolded at the A.W. Christy Recreation Center during the opening day of its pool.
Police say the shooting occurred just after 4 p.m., while dozens of people were at the pool. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel confirmed that a teenage boy was shot multiple times in the back and is in very critical condition. Two younger children, aged 10 and 11, were grazed by bullets but are expected to recover.
A recreation center employee also sustained graze wounds to his hand and buttocks and is reported to be in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
Escalation of violence
According to Commissioner Bethel, officers had responded earlier in the day to a fight near the recreation center, which staff successfully broke up. However, participants in the dispute allegedly returned later and opened fire on their targets outside the pool area.
The motives behind the initial altercation and the shooting remain unclear. Law enforcement is currently investigating the incident and working to identify the individuals responsible for the violence.
Community concerns
The shooting has sparked renewed concern over gun-related violence in Philadelphia, particularly in spaces meant to serve as safe havens for children and families. Local authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
