Swiss tourist faces jail for criticizing Bali religious festival

A Swiss tourist in Bali faces up to five years in prison after posting insulting comments on Instagram about the island’s Hindu New Year celebration, authorities said. The arrest highlights the seriousness with which Indonesia treats criticism of local religious traditions.

The tourist is accused of denigrating Nyepi, a Hindu holiday observed on March 19, during which residents and visitors are required to remain indoors for 24 hours and refrain from work, travel, entertainment, and even electricity usage. Nyepi is intended as a day of silence, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

In his Instagram story, the man wrote in English: “A day of silence where you can’t go outside is quite peaceful :) F*** Nyepi and f*** your rules too.” He was reported to police and arrested on Saturday. Authorities are seizing his phone and questioning witnesses as part of the investigation.

Bali draws millions of foreign visitors each year, and local authorities frequently warn that inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. Last week, two French nationals and an Italian were arrested for producing and distributing pornography, which is strictly prohibited in Indonesia.
