Morocco ranks 45th worldwide in 2026 disaster risk index

Morocco ranks 45th out of 193 countries in the 2026 World Risk Index, recording an overall score of 12.59 points and placing it in the report’s “high risk” category.

The country’s score is just 1.13 points below the threshold for the “very high risk” category, which begins at 13.73 points. The index assesses disaster risk by combining countries’ exposure to natural hazards with the vulnerability of their populations and institutions.

The 2026 report was produced by Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft in cooperation with the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Its methodology combines exposure and vulnerability indicators to provide a comparative assessment of disaster risk worldwide.

Morocco recorded 7.45 points for exposure, placing it in the “high exposure” category, which ranges from 2.14 to 8.76 points. Its vulnerability score stood at 21.26, falling within the “medium vulnerability” category, defined by the report as ranging from 15.98 to 23.40 points.

The overall World Risk Index score is calculated using the geometric mean of the exposure and vulnerability scores. For Morocco, the combination of the two indicators produces the reported overall score of 12.59.

The 2026 edition also introduced a new Storm Risk Index, in which Morocco ranked 130th globally with a score of 0.46. This placed the country in the “low risk” category, which ranges from 0.39 to 0.50 points. Morocco shared the same ranking and score with Suriname and Eritrea.

The contrast is significant when compared with countries facing the highest levels of storm risk. The Philippines ranked first with a score of 69.27, followed by Mexico at 47.40 and Madagascar at 44.99.

At the other end of the scale, Monaco recorded a storm risk score of 0.15, followed by Singapore at 0.17 and Luxembourg at 0.18.

The findings underline the distinction between exposure to natural hazards and a country’s ability to cope with their potential consequences. While Morocco’s storm risk remains relatively low under the index’s methodology, its overall disaster-risk score also reflects broader exposure and vulnerability factors.
