Morocco to Face Mali in Tangier After Ghana Withdraws From Friendly

Wednesday 30 September 2026 - 16:06

Morocco’s national football team will face Mali in an international friendly in Tangier on Sunday, following Ghana’s withdrawal from the fixture originally scheduled against the Lions of the Atlas.

The match will be played at the Grand Stadium of Tangier at 6 p.m., according to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), which confirmed the change after receiving official notification from the Ghanaian football authorities.

Ghana withdraws from scheduled fixture

The friendly was initially intended to bring Morocco and Ghana together, but the Ghanaian federation informed the FRMF that it would no longer be able to participate, citing internal reasons.

Morocco subsequently arranged a new opponent, with Mali stepping in for the encounter in Tangier. The fixture will give the national side another opportunity to test its squad and maintain competitive momentum during the international window.

Morocco arrives after two qualifying victories

The Lions of the Atlas head into the match after a strong start to their campaign in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco recorded identical 2–0 victories against Gabon and Lesotho in its opening two qualifying matches. Those results provided the national team with a positive platform as preparations continue for the continental tournament.

The meeting with Mali will therefore offer an additional competitive test, while allowing the Moroccan coaching staff to assess the squad against a different style of opposition.

With the fixture now confirmed in Tangier, attention will turn to Sunday’s encounter and Morocco’s next step in its preparations for the challenges ahead.
